Fun Territory Defense of the Easy-Going Lord: Chapter-338

On a spur of the moment idea, I decided to put up a sign in front of the lord’s mansion. The sign read as follows:

The title was “Come, future lord candidates! Now is the golden opportunity for climbing the ranks!”

The details read, “Recruiting territory management assistants. Apprentices will receive five copper coins per day. Staff members will receive eight copper coins per day. Supervisors will receive at least one silver coin per day. Main duties include document preparation, various calculation tasks, and light manual labor. The more you work, the more you’ll be rewarded! It’s a fulfilling workplace!”

Hmm, this has a vibe of a “white company” about it. In this world, the concept of holidays isn't very widespread, and most commoners work from morning until evening every day. With that in mind, five copper coins a day might feel a bit low, but as one ranks up to staff or supervisor, life will improve. Moreover, in my territory, there are no housing costs, and everyday necessities are also available at very low prices. I think it's a decent salary, but... what do others think?

I thought about this, but it seemed the villagers’ reaction wasn’t all that great.

I had been standing by the lord’s mansion window, watching carefully. The sign had certainly attracted attention. Villagers would stop, talk to each other about the contents of the sign, and even knights and merchants passing by would glance at it curiously.

However, they all passed by with somewhat unimpressed expressions. Why was that? Maybe I should’ve written something like “A warm, family-like workplace?”

I kept observing, wondering if someone would visit the lord’s mansion. Then, Til called out to me from behind.

“Not many people are applying, huh?”

“Yeah... I guess the pay might be too low…”

As I muttered, Til frowned in mock anger and placed her hands on her hips.

“That’s not true! I’d serve you even for free, Van-sama!”

“…That’s probably just you, Til.”

I chuckled at her outrageous reasoning when Arte suddenly spoke up in a small voice, “Ah.”

“What’s up?”

I turned around and asked, and Arte placed the documents she had on the desk and spoke.

“Well, maybe it’s because adventurers make so much money. Could that be why?”

“I-I see…!”

I was greatly convinced by Arte’s words. After all, adventurers like Ortho and the others earn unimaginable amounts of money. One reason is that they can stay in dungeons and the Wolfsburg Mountain Range for as long as they need. Normally, one would stay in a dungeon for a few days, and after about ten days, they’d be eager to return to town due to the hardships of camping. However, in the dungeon near Ceat Village, there’s a base where they can rest comfortably. It’s a lovely place to stay without worrying about magical beasts attacking.

Moreover, even when fighting the powerful magical beasts in the dungeons and mountain ranges, adventurers equipped with Van’s special gear can defeat them without much trouble. As a result, adventurers return with rare magical beast materials and ores from large group hunts, and some have even been talking about buying vacation homes in Ceat Village.

Thinking about this, many might consider becoming adventurers when they’re in trouble. However, there’s no way I can offer a salary that would rival those adventurers. Well, I could pay them, but it would be difficult to maintain that salary for many years.

“…Ah, that reminds me, shouldn’t we increase the pay for the knights too?”

Suddenly, I realized something important. If even the villagers were envious of the adventurers’ earnings, the knights might feel the same.

“After all, with Dee’s hellish training every day… If I don’t think carefully, a lot of knights might decide to quit and become adventurers…”

I suddenly became anxious and couldn’t sit still. Dee’s training is incredibly intense. However, since the person who designs that training (Dee) is undergoing even stricter training right beside them, no one dares complain.

“…Alright! I’ll go do a quick investigation with the knights right now!”

“Huh? Right now?”

“Espada’s out on an errand! We can sneak out, gather information, and return without anyone noticing!”

“D-Do you think that’s okay…?”

I turned around with energy and called out to everyone, and both Til and Arte were surprised. Kamshin glanced at the pile of documents for a moment and immediately turned his face toward me.

“…I think it’ll be fine as long as we’re back in an hour.”

“Alright, one hour it is!”

I nodded in agreement, accepting Kamshin’s advice, though it wasn’t very well-founded.

It’s not that I want to escape from the pile of documents. I’m doing this to prevent the possible collapse of the knight’s order in the future. I’m reluctantly leaving work behind to go take care of it. It’s definitely not because I’m tired of paperwork.

“Let’s go, everyone! Operation ‘Red Light, We’ll Cross Together, and It Won’t Be Scary!’”

“Huh? Red Light?”

“What does that mean?”

With everyone confused, I led the way and dashed out of the office.
